WPP Media has been appointed Mastercard’s global media agency, taking over media strategy, planning and buying across more than 70 markets and ending a decade-long relationship with Dentsu’s Carat.
Mastercard cited WPP Media’s global reach, AI and data capabilities, and connected approach across paid media and business enablement as factors in the decision. Ogilvy, also part of WPP, will support community management, while McCann remains the creative agency of record.
WPP Media CEO Brian Lesser described the win as a landmark for the company, pointing to the momentum of the rebranded WPP Media and investments designed to give clients an advantage in the AI era. COMvergence estimates Mastercard’s global media spend at around $180 million.
The account move comes as WPP Media seeks to demonstrate the value of its integrated model after a period of client losses. It also highlights how major brands are evaluating agency partners on AI readiness and data capabilities alongside traditional media strengths.
