Study Finds 56% of AI Citations to Press Releases Come After the First Week

A new study from Notified finds that 56% of citations to GlobeNewswire press releases by ChatGPT and Claude occur after the first week of publication, according to an analysis of more than 25,000 releases and nearly one million AI citations.

The research, to be presented today at PRSA ICON 2026, examines how large language models discover, index and cite owned and earned content. It shows that AI systems continue to surface press releases well beyond their initial distribution window, with a relatively small share of releases capturing most of the citations.

Notified CEO Erik Carlson is scheduled to lead a session titled “Get Cited by ChatGPT: The Data-Backed Guide to AI Search Visibility.” The findings are intended to give communications teams practical insight into how AI tools treat press releases over time and what factors influence longer-term visibility.

The study comes as more organizations focus on how their content appears in AI-generated answers, alongside traditional media coverage and search results. Notified’s Content OS platform, which combines distribution, AI-assisted creation, monitoring and AI visibility insights, is being demonstrated at the event.

The data highlights that press release visibility in AI systems is not limited to the first days after publication and that sustained relevance can continue to generate citations weeks later.
